Guangzhou to own over 350 libraries by 2025

Which library or museum have you visited in Guangzhou? Do you know how many libraries and museums there are in the city? Are you wondering where you can learn more about the city's attractions? This is where our guide comes in.

By the end of 2020, there were 1,699 public library service outlets in Guangzhou, including 294 libraries or branches,according to the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau. That means, an average of about 52,000 residents share one library, based on the permanent resident population of 15,305,900 in the city at the end of 2019.

Meanwhile,the total construction area of public libraries has reached 502,300 square meters, with a collection of 29,250,000 printed books and a cumulative registered readership of 3,967,900,among which the number of the Guangzhou Library exceeds 2 million.

The city has 65 registered museums in total, and 46 venues are in the process of filing registration procedures to become a real museum. Among the 65 museums, 36 belong to the heritage system, 14 feature various industries and 15 are non-state-owned. There are 5 national first level museums, 11 second-level ones, and 7 third-level ones.

As of 2020, all the museums in the city have a total collection of 1,386,884 pieces, including 163,729 pieces of cultural relics.The number of visitors to museums is 13.76 million per year, with more than 450 exhibitions featuring various themes. In addition, more than 1,000 educational projects have been planned, and about 5,000 educational activities have been implemented.

Guangzhou has built 199 cultural centers, among which 12 above district level are also national first-class centers, and 2,744 comprehensive community cultural service centers. The new Guangzhou Cultural and Arts Centre, with a total construction area of 57,000 square meters, will be put into use at the end of this year, serving as a platform for performances for public good, training, exhibitions, exchange and protection of cultural heritages.

No matter if you are new to the city or a local, you can easily find the tourism information you need in the following centers.There are 25 tourist information centers and 11 tourist centers across the city.The tourist centers are located in Guangzhou South Railway Station, Jiaokou Station, Fangcun Station, Dashatou Station, Yuexiu South Bus Station, Liuhua Bus Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station, Tianhe Station, Luochongwei Station, Haizhu Station and Conghua Station.

Guangzhou is striving to build a number of major public cultural venues with a high standard by 2025,with the total number of libraries reaching more than 350 and one public library serving every 55,000 residents. The total number of museums, art museums and memorials will amount to 120, including 10 featuring special themes, so that every 170,000 residents can share one museum. What's more, the area of indoor public cultural facilities for per 10,000 people will be up to 1,800 square meters by then.
