Breaking: Guangzhou identifies GD’s 1st Omicron variant case
Update: 2021-12-14     Source: Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office

The Guangzhou epidemic prevention and control press conference held on the afternoon of December 14 stated that Guangzhou had identified its first case of the Omicron variant.

The 67-year-old male lives at No. 65 Tiansheng Village, Huale Street, Yuexiu District. Since November 27, the male had received multiple nucleic acid tests during his centralized-quarantine period, which all returned negative.

On December 11, after quarantine, he returned to Guangzhou via flight (CA1837), and was transferred in a closed-loop manner to receive home-based quarantine in Yuexiu District.

On December 12, the Huale Street Community Health Service Center routinely collected nucleic acid samples for him. However, the result returned positive.

The patient was transferred in a closed-loop way to the Eighth Hospital Affiliated to Guangzhou Medical University for isolation and treatment. After further examination and expert consultation, the patient was diagnosed with a common type of new  COVID-19 Omicron variant and is currently in stable condition.

The Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention performed the complete genomic sequencing and sequence analysis to identify the new coronavirus variant from nasal swab samples taken from the patient. After the provincial and municipal CDC’s review and the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s confirmation, the new coronavirus case was determined to have the Omicron variant.

Residents in areas surrounding the residential community where the patient resides are required to take two nucleic acid tests for COVID-19 within three days.

The focus zone for testing and transport restrictions covers the area west of Taojin North Road, east of Luhu Road (but not including Luhu Road), north of Huanshi East Road (but not including Huanshi East Road), and south of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway line.

In addition, Exit B of Guangzhou Metro Line 5’s Taojin station has been closed.
