Guangzhou opens floating flower market in Liwan
Update: 2020-01-06     Source: Newsgd.com

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, this year Guangzhou is holding a traditional floating flower market and a series of activities at Yong Qing wharf (永庆码头) and Qixiang Square (吉祥广场), Liwan District. Visitors can come and experience this extra special flower market every weekend and public holiday from January 1st to 24th.

According to the organizer, the floating market recreates the imagery of ‘花渡头(Hua Du Tou)’ which is the origin of the Guangzhou flower market and dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Visitors can take a boat departing from Yongqing wharf to travel back in time.

In addition, there will be a waterfront market at Jixiang Square where visitors can pick up festival gifts and enjoy traditional handcrafts, coffee and the new year’s light display along the waterfront.

Other activities including Chinese zodiac painting, and pop-up musical performances will be held at the same time. A special New Year performance will also be held at the venue on January 25th and 26th.

Located on Enning Road, Yong Qing Fang features typical Lingnan style water-town architecture decorated with exquisite porcelain and wood-carvings. It’s one of Guangzhou’s urban regeneration projects aiming to enliven a district while maintaining its unique characteristics. The second phrase of the project is anticipated to open to public in 2020.
