Guangzhou Development District (GDD) and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) signed an MoU on January 15th to jointly set up the Sino-Ukraine International Innovation and Research Institute in Huangpu. The project aims to formulate a new system to boost innovation while speeding up the industrialization of NASU’s technologies in Guangzhou.

NASU is a main center of scientific and technological development in Ukraine. According to the agreement, the institute will make use of the resources of the two Parties in such fields as advanced materials, information technology and bio-science, and facilitate cooperation in R&D, infrastructure development and technological innovation projects. 

Through the exchanges of talent and technologies with Ukraine, the institute is expected to benefit the current 20 thousand tech-companies in the GDD, and to further the development of GDD as an international technological innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In addition, GDD had meetings with the research institutes of NASU to seek further cooperation. The district inked an MoU with the I.N. Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science to build a parallel lab for new materials in Huangpu on January 14th. GDD is home to more than 150 high-tech companies in the sector of new materials, and it plans to invest 15 billion yuan in developing the industry in the next five years.

GDD is a cluster of research institutes and the first pilot district in China for regional policy cooperation with Europe. In 2018, the district signed an agreement with the Sino-German Science and Education Park in Heidelberg to set up offshore innovation centers in both cities to help entrepreneurs.
