Established 17 years ago, GZDOC has evolved from an academic seminar with 683 entries from 56 different locations in 2011, to one of the most influential professional documentary film festivals in the world. In 2019, a total of 3,441 films from 130 countries and regions entered the competition.

One or more winning or shortlisted documentaries from the GZDOC Golden Kapok Award Competition are nominated for an Oscar almost every year. ‘5 Broken Cameras’, co-directed by Palestinian Emad Burnat and Israeli Guy Davidi, was the winner of the Best Documentary Feature Award at GZDOC 2012, and nominated for the Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013.

‘Minding the Gap’ directed by Chinese American director Bing Liu was awarded the Best First Feature Documentary at GZDOC 2018, and nominated for the Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019.

GZDOC 2020 will be held from 14th-17th December, 2020 in Guangzhou. Submit your film and seize your chance to tap into the China market.
