Summer holiday to start no later than August 1st for Guangdong schools
Update: 2020-05-09     Source: Newsgd.com

As of midnight of May 7th, Guangdong had reported neither new confirmed cases nor new asymptomatic cases.

Guangdong reported 1,589 confirmed cases in total (among which 194 were imported cases). Six patients remain in hospital.

The 59th press conference on Guangdong's fight against COVID-19 was held in Guangzhou today (May 8th).

“Almost 97% of secondary schools’ senior students are already back at secondary schools,” said Wang Chuang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.

Wang said that as of May 7th, Guangdong’s 21 cities have formulated arrangements for the remaining secondary school students. Moreover, 18 cities have determined the arrangements for primary school students to resume off-line classes.

15 million students and teachers in Guangdong are estimated to return to school in waves starting from May 11th.

Elementary and secondary schools will start summer vacations no later than August 1st, and the fall semester will be scheduled as normal, according to an earlier announcement from the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.

“Guangdong will adjust its the public health emergency response from level Ⅱ to level Ⅲ, effective midnight May 9th,” Duan Yufei, Director-General of the Health Commission of Guangdong Province announced at the press conference.

Duan said that this adjustment is mainly based on the fact that as of May 7th, there had been no newly confirmed local cases in Guangdong in 9 consecutive days. And 17 cities in the province have cleared all COVID-19 cases.

However, he also stressed, "Guangdong has frequent people-to-people exchange, so there is still a risk of the outbreak in the future."

After adjusting the emergency response level, on the premise of implementing prevention and control measures, Guangdong will fully open shopping malls, supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants.

Reservations and person flow control are to be practiced in the opening of parks, tourist attractions, sports venues, indoor venues like libraries, museums, and art galleries, as well as various conferences and exhibitions.

“As the next step, Guangdong will establish a mutual health certification recognition system with Hong Kong and Macao,” Duan said.
