Album highlights Guangzhou Opera House in 10 years

As the architectural masterpiece that is the Guangzhou Opera House celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the theater released a memorial photo album 'The Decade' on May 9th. The album records wonderful moments from the theater's best performances over the past ten years, including artists' signatures, messages and hand models. Here are some highlights from the theater over the past decade.

On May 6th-9th, 2010, the year of the Guangzhou Asian Games, world-famous conductor Lorin Maazel presented the opening opera 'Turandot'for Guangzhou Opera House.

On February 25th, 2011architectural designer Zaha Hadidvisited Guangzhou in person to unveil the first opera house built on her design in her lifetime.

The building was awarded theRoyal Institute of British Architects Award, and praised as mankind's greatest building, the best public building in the world, the most magnificent theatre, the most beautiful concert hall and billed among the top 10 opera houses in the world.

The opera house has achieved a balance of revenue and expenditure for 9 consecutive years, with its revenue exceeding 100 million RMBfor 5 consecutive yearsnow.

The theater has participated in variouscultural eventsincluding the Guangzhou Art Festival, China International Youth Arts Festival, Guandong-Hong Kong-Macao GBA Culture and Arts Festival, and the China International Performing Arts Fair, as well as many international foreign affairs activitiessuch as the Guangzhou Asian Games, the China-Egypt Cultural Year, the Russian Culture Festival in China and the Fortune Global Forum.

Guests of the Fortune Global Forum visit the Guangzhou Opera House. 

The 2017 Guangzhou International Floral Art Exhibition and the World Flower Council (WFC) Annual Summit kicked off on September 19 at the Guangzhou Opera House. 

So far, over1,300 Chinese and foreign art groupscomprising of about 32,000 artistshave performed on the stage of Guangzhou Opera House, bringing 4,038 performancesand over 1,900 activitiesin the forms of operamusicaldramadanceand music, with an average of more than 400 performancesstaged each year.

Of the performers, the oldest was90 years oldand the youngest only 5.

The venue has attracted a total of5 million residents.

Musicis the most popular type of performance, accounting for 22%of the shows.

The top 3 popular performancesare: The Phantom of the Operaby Andrew Lloyd-Webber, the 2017 opera Aidaby Verdi as well as Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker in concert.

Many othertop orchestrashave also visited the opera house: the Philadelphia Orchestra, Saint-Petersburg Academic Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden National Symphony Orchestra and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra have all performed in Guangzhou.

Since 2010,one large-scale operahas been introduced or produced each year: Turandot, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, The Lady of the Camellias, Carmen, The Magic Fluteand more.

2019was the busiest year yet at the opera house, with capacity reaching 90%utilisation.

Tony Awards best musical 'Titanic The Musical' is staged at the theater in 2019. 

A total of2.53 million ticketshave been sold over the past ten years, and the length of all these tickets add up to the height of 856 Canton towers.

The staff have presented5,870 bouquetsto the artists.

Artists' favourite energy supply has beencoffee73,000 packetsof which was consumed over the past ten years.

The Art Education Center of Guangzhou Opera House has trained 10,322 future artists, created 8 coursesand 3 performance groups.

It has set up a series of art management workshops, organizing33 academic activitieswith 4,000 participantsin total;

It has500,000 membersand over 1.23 million followerson its official WeChat and Weibo accounts.

The opera house created its first opera 'Marco Polo'themed on the Belt and Road in 2018, which was performed in Italy.

It has promoted the globalization of Guangdong's art groups and excellent performances. Over300 Lingnan cultural and artistic masterpieceshave been staged to date in Guangzhou Opera House.

Musical 'Lady Xiguan' is staged at the theater during the 2016 China International Performing Arts Fair (CIPAF) of Guangzhou. 

It launched China's first online play'Waiting for Godot'in 2020, which attracted around 290,000 peoplesimultaneously watching online, making it the play with the largest number of audience members in a single showing.
