Pearl River Park, covering an area of 28 hectares, will undergo a major overhaul to fulfill the the functions as a city central park.
Located at the heart of Guangzhou central business district, Pearl River Park is a ‘green oasis’ in the center of Zhujiang New Town on a par with Central Park in New York City and Hyde Park in central London.
The walls of the park will be demolished bring the serenity and beauty of natural environment to the surrounding areas. Machang Road in the east side will be rebuilt as an open terrace square, while Jinsui Road in the north side will become a free-moving traffic zone. Huacheng Avenue in the south side will be turned into a fitness road, and Liede Chung on the west side is going to be a cultural corridor for the annual Dragon Boat Race whilst also being rebuilt as a demonstrative riverside road.
First opened in 2001, the park was built in an enclosed space with four gates in all directions. However, after being overhauled, the park is expected to become a fully open swath of green with full public access in the future.
