Domestic flight volume and passenger flow are gradually returning to normal as passengers leaving Guangzhou, Guangdong province, since July 3 are no longer required to present a negative coronavirus test taken within 48-hours.

Having confirmed no locally transmitted COVID-19 for about a month, Guangdong has become a low-risk area.

Song Yasheng, a senior executive at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, said the airport now has more than 1,000 flights departing and landing daily, and it is processing more than 110,000 passengers per day.

"Flights to and from the city clusters of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, the Yangtze River Delta and Chengdu and Chongqing municipalities have recovered obviously in recent weeks," Song said. "Domestic flight volume has come back to more than 80 percent of what it was before Guangzhou's coronavirus outbreak on May 21."

Song predicted the airport would soon return to normal operations and see a peak period from the end of July to mid-August, when schools nationwide begin their summer holidays.

Guangzhou's airport, one of three major aviation hubs on the Chinese mainland, became the world's busiest in passenger throughput last year.
