First held in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), this competition asks for zero-carbon designing and proposes contestants to use environment-friendly materials and uphold 5R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Regeneration, Rejection), which are consistent with international standards. Entries boasting both aesthetic value and practicability are preferred. In line with China’s strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and achieve carbon neutrality, outstanding architectures will be applied to surrounding areas of Jiulong Lake in the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, so as to support sustainable development in this green and low-carbon community.

College students from top GBA universities, including South China University of Technology, Jinan University, Shenzhen University, South China Agricultural University, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou University and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, participated in this competition. In the three months to come, they will work together to design and create zero-carbon landscape sketches that are capable of meeting diverse recreational demands, be they for individuals, family or community.

“Connecting GBA cities, the competition offers a platform for students from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to communicate and forge friendships,” Li Hongsheng, Level 1 Consultant-Director of Guangzhou Development Zone Management Committee, said at the opening ceremony.
