Guangzhou steps up efforts to curb virus in public transportation
Update: 2020-02-13     Source: lifeofguangzhou

Guangzhou's public transportation departments have taken precautions by inspecting all vehicles and checking passengers leaving and arriving in the city in response to the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP), an official said at a press conference on February 11.

As of February 10, the authorities had examined about 5.44 million vehicles and checked the body temperature of about 41.8 million passengers. They have confirmed 1,688 people who have fever, and placed 209 people under quarantine for medical observation at designated hospitals.

Li Chaowen, deputy director of the Guangzhou Bureau of Transportation, said the inspection efforts to curb the spread of the virus have been reinforced since the city activated its first-level of public health emergency response. “Guangzhou has set up 222 temperature monitoring points from January 24, including 192 at intercity highways, 22 at national and provincial highways, and 8 at intracity roads,” Li said. “Meanwhile, the government has urged transport companies to disinfect vehicles and parking places, inspect drivers and relevant staff, and suspend all regular traffic routes to Hubei province.”

Wang Xiaodong, director of the traffic police detachment of the Guangzhou Bureau of Public Security, said all buses, metros, and taxies (including those hailed online) are disinfected every day, while drivers and passengers are required to have their body temperatures measured. The city's 826 bus lines are equipped with 14,000 hand-held thermometers, aiming to cover all stations and lines.

"Five disinfection centers have been established at Guangzhou Railway Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station, and Jixiang Road, offering free disinfection services for taxies and online hailed cars," Wang said.
