Upcoming events to greet Spring Festival in GZ
Update: 2020-01-16     Source: lifeofguangzhou.com

With Spring Festival approaching, Guangzhou, the flower city, has scheduled a series of festivities to greet the biggest annual celebration in China, including artificial intelligence (AI) flower markets, lantern shows, garden expos and singing and dancing performances. If you choose to spend Spring Festival in the city, check out the activities below!

AI flower market

The AI flower market will open for free on Haixinsha Island between January 22 and February 8, allowing visitors to "stroll through" flower fairs via the Internet by scanning a QR code posted on the spot. Several AI flower shops have also been set up at Canton tower, the Garden Hotel, Yongqing Fang and other places, offering more options for citizens to admire and purchase creative flower arrangements.

If you are an enthusiast of high-tech products, the flagship shop on Haixinsha Island should be a great spot to visit. Along with online flower sales, cutting-edge high-tech products—like electronic devices adopting the 5G technology—will be displayed there, and dancing performances by 56 robots in traditional Chinese costumes will be staged to entertain visitors.

An exhibition, featuring creative products of intangible cultural heritage, like artworks of paper carving, will also be scheduled on the spot, allowing citizens to taste a bit of traditional Chinese culture.

The 27th Guangzhou Garden Expo

Spreading over 100,000 square meters, the Garden Expo will be held at Haixinsha and Huacheng Square from January 20 to February 8. Highlights of the expo include a giant floral arrangement designed in the shape of a hexagonal lantern in typical Lingnan style. Several themed exhibitions will be set up, featuring aerial photographs showcasing China's magnificent landscapes, 88 new species of China rose (or "yueji",月季), and art works from China's first undergraduate competition on garden design.

 Singing and dancing performances

A gala of stunning singing and dancing performances, which wowed audiences during the 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Expo, will be staged at Haixinsha Asian Olympic Games Park. With local cultural performances like Cantonese opera and lion dances, the gala will offer the audience a visual feast.

Super Vocal (《声入人心》), a male vocal ensemble which has gained popularity among younger generations in China, will sweep audience off their feet with performances like musicals, operas and bel canto singing, an operatic singing style characterized by beauty of tone, on January 21.

E-sports games

A special area will be set aside for e-sports games this year on Haixinsha Island. Visitors will be provided a chance to experience Blaster, the world's first MR (Mediated Reality) competitive game created by China's NetEase Games. A good choice for families with children will be another MR game displayed there, offering immersive experiences for participants by taking them onto an adventure to explore virgin forests, mysterious depths of the sea world, and even the age of dinosaurs.

People also can enjoy the regular annual activities in the city. More than 200,000 strains of different tulips will make a flash at Yuntai Garden between January 22 and February 10. The Yuexiu Lantern Show, featuring various species of flowers and about 80 light displays in different traditional designs, will be unveiled at Yuexiu Park from January 18 to February 16.

A total of 20 internationally well-known families in the cultural tourism industry from 20 overseas major tourist source cities, including New York, Sydney, Vancouver, Tokyo, and Singapore, will be invited to visit Guangzhou during the holiday to get a close look at the folk culture of the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival.
