September to October

Mid-autumn Festival is an important custom of Guangzhou. On the 15th day of the eighth month of every year, people watch and pray to the full moon, which they see as a symbol of family reunion. Su Shi, a famous poet of the Song Dynasty has a poetic line to describe this annual event and express his thought of his brother: "People experience happiness, sorrow, reunion and separation, just as the moon wanes and rounds".

Full moon appreciation is a necessary activity for Guangzhou citizens. Square tables are set in open space or balconies, on which placed moon cakes, shaddocks, fried oxetones, fried colocasia, longans and other fruits. Families gather around tables to chat, sing and eat fruits and moon cakes until midnight. Apart from moon appreciation, many families still observe the tradition of moon worshipping. Legend has it that the mid-autumn day is the birthday of the moon. Qiuzhi, the goddess of the moon is worshipped by many women. After moon worshipping, families will have a taste of shaddocks. Lantern fair is a necessary opportunity during the Mid-autumn Festival of Guangzhou. The bright moon and glaring lanterns add radiance to each other, lighting up the entire city. People appreciate the full moon, expressing their wishes and saying prayers for their beloved.
