Animal Admiration

Opened in1958, the Guangzhou Zoo covers an area of 42 hectares. It is home to over 5,000 specimens; 400 species from home and the balance from abroad. All of which are displayed in separate areas according to the genus and species such as: insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, primates, cats, herbivores and etc.. The zoo receives 4 million tourists annually, ranking in the top 3 zoos in China.

The animals native to China which reside there include giant pandas, golden monkeys, South China tigers, deer, Eld's deer, black-necked cranes, and from abroad chimpanzees, giraffes, African elephants, hippopotamus, zebras, rhinos, black swans and other overseas rare birds and animals. Some of the major display areas to be found at the zoo are as follows:

۞ Ocean World

Located in the Guangzhou Zoo, the Ocean World accommodates over 200 kinds of fish and other rare marine life. The major sites include: the Undersea Tunnel, Deep-sea Landscape, Tropical Reef Tank with a length of 18 meters, Treasure Tank, Touch Pool, Fresh Water World, Carp Pond, Shark Aquarium, Sea Lions Paradise, and so, all of which present a visual feast for tourists.

۞ Kangaroo House

Wooden trestle bridge is constructed above the glass-fenced playground, where tourists may have watch the movement of kangaroos and fully understand their life habit.

۞ Bird House

Located in the central and western of Guangzhou Zoo, the Bird House covers an area of 8,000 square meters, where birds now freely live, no longer confined by the wire fence. All the wire fences of the bird cages, such as the cages of parrots, ostriches, emus and turkeys have been torn down and birds of different species are separated by the stream and rock. The play ground for the birds has been expanded by 4,500 square meters, so that tourists may watch the life of birds more conveniently and directly.

۞ Gorilla House

The Gorilla House covers an area of 3,000 square meters, two thirds of which has been constructed as a garden-style playground. The House is divided into indoor and an outdoor house. On the first floor of the former is built eight air-conditioned rest rooms and two glass rooms where tourists may have a face-to-face experience with gorillas. And on the second floor is constructed an observation terrace where tourists may observe the life of gorillas from a higher standing.

۞ Goldfish Displays

The Fish Pond stands next to the Hippo Pond. It breeds more than ten thousand varieties of fish, of which one hundred are valuable species from home and abroad, for which the Guangzhou Zoo's breeding program won a Guinness Book of Records award.. It is a paradise for children where they may catch fishes and lobsters.
