Night-blooming cereus is a kind of tropical and subtropical plant. The plant can grow easily without much pesticide application. The flower, when sun-dried, is an excellent ingredient for making soup and also good for steamed or stir-fried chicken and duck meat. With at least 13 kinds of amino acid and rich crude fiber and calcium, the flower is commonly used in making soup since it can help moisten the lung, dissolve heat, reduce phlegm and relieve cough.

The climate of Renhe Town in Guangzhou is fit for the growth of night-blooming cereus so the planting of the flower has become the key plant production in the Baiyun District. It comes into blossom from June to November and it is best to pick the flowers during this period. When the flowers blossom, the local residents can take a daytrip to the 1,500-mu (about 1,000,000 square meters)cereus production base to take photos while walking through and around the fields, catching chickens and ducks, and pick some of the flowers. They can also buy the sun-dried flowers locally and enjoy a "night-blooming cereus" feast at the local village restaurants.
