Museums of Special Interest

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum at Shen Nong Cottage is located on the premises of Guangzhou Baiyunshan Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., covering an area of 25,000 square meters. Built at a cost of more than RMB 100 million, the museum is China's largest semi-open one of its kind, dubbed "the Grand View Garden" for the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture. Visitors are offered free admissions, on-spot diagnosis, and opportunities to sample special medicated food and to experience the charms of the TCM culture.

The first phase of the museum covers an area of over 3,000 square meters and is a semi-open modern facility showcasing the enduring history and brilliant culture of TCM through relief sculptures, carved sculptures, an art gallery, exhibition walls, physical specimens, models of medical tools, and multimedia.

The Shen Nong Cottage was designed on the basis of the famed "Diagram of Internal Veins" in TCM. Unlike regular Lingnan gardens, all plants used for greening purposes in the cottage have medicinal value. At present, the cottage grows more than 1,000 different kinds of TCM plants, ranging from highly toxic Antiaris and Gelsemium elegans, to frangipane and Mangosteen commonly used by local people in soup brewing, and to Chinese rugosa and coix seeds used in common TCM common TCM prescription drugs, making it a truly "Grand View Garden" for TCM.

The first phase of the cottage is primarily intended to showcase TCM, while the second phase is a massive 22,000-square-meter garden featuring TCM culture. Stepping into the front grate, you will come to the Lingnan Palace, which features Lingnan's geography, topography, soil conditions, climate, common diseases and their cures, a brief history of the formation of Lingnan medicine, time-honored brands of Lingnan TCM, and the characteristics of Lingnan medicine. Across the Lingnan Palace is the Songyao Palace, which showcases the precious legacy of TCM health nursing culture and employs multimedia and wax figures to promote TCM health culture.

As a major facility showcasing China's TCM culture, the Shen Nong Cottage has been designated as a national-class base for the promotion of TCM culture. It has teamed up with the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM and GZL to build China's first base for the popularization of TCM culture and Guangdong's first base for health tourism.
