Dongshan Christian Church was established at Wuxianxi, Guangzhou in 1870, the 9th year of Emperor Tongzhi's reign in the Qing Dynasty. Foreign missionaries bought the Wuxianxi storefront and changed it into boarding cottage, establishing a mixed school and gospel hall.

In 1909, the first year of Emperor Xuantong's reign in Qing Dynasty, a new Church was built at Sibeitongjin 9, and Dongshan Baptist Church was established at the same year with Yu Ruiyun as the pastor. With the increase of Christians, the old church was enlarged into a two-storey reinforced concrete building in 1927, covering an area of 1,000 square meters with 1,300 seats.

In 1949, overseas Chinese donated to add a parsonage to establish a home for the aged, the Lord's Day School, and the takeover of the Mu Kuang School for the Blind, etc., and publish the monthly magazine Zhaoxi. Christians at that time increased in number to over 2,000.

On September 30, 1979, the Church reopened. In 1986, it regained its real estates taken and leased houses of the Lord's Day School and the fellowship hall out in order to open the Guangdong Union Theological Seminary. In 1987, the Guangzhou Christian Three-Self Patriotic Committee and Guangzhou Christian Council moved their offices to this property.
