It is reported that Guangzhou's economic development zones contributed nearly 60% of the city's total foreign trade, more than 70% of the total value added of industrial enterprises above the designated size, and nearly 80% of the actual use of foreign capital.

Established in 1984, Guangzhou Development District is one of the first 14 national economic and technological development zones in China. Since its establishment, it has attracted a large number of Fortune Global 500 companies and multinational enterprises such as Procter & Gamble, Amway, and Mars to settle in the district.

So far, it has formed five industrial clusters with each worth over a hundred billion RMB, covering fields such as automobile manufacturing, advanced display, green energy, new materials, beauty and health, together with three industrial clusters with each worth more than 50 billion RMB covering the fields of integrated circuits, bio-medicine, and high-end equipment, with a total industrial output value reaching nearly 900 billion RMB, accounting for about 40% of the city's total industrial output value. In 2023, the actual use of foreign capital of Guangzhou Development District exceeded three billion USD, of which high-tech industries accounted for more than 90%.

Guangzhou Development District now has built ten national industrial bases, forming the largest incubator cluster and innovation platform in South China. It highlights four industrial clusters, including China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, Guangzhou Science City, Port of Huangpu, and Guangzhou International Bio Island, focusing on the development of emerging industries, innovative projects, headquarters economy, and knowledge-intensive industries.
