Data Explorer | Guangdong's automobile industry keeps expanding domestic and overseas markets
Update:2024-02-05    Source: GDToday

Based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2023, Guangdong's automobile production reached 5.1919 million units, of which 2.5318 million were new energy vehicles, ranking first in the country and accounting for 17.2% and 26.8% of the country's total, respectively. Specifically, one out of every four new energy vehicles made in China comes from Guangdong.

New energy vehicles have become the main driving force behind the high-quality development of Guangdong's automobile industry. In 2023, the production of new energy vehicles in Guangdong increased by 83.3% year-on-year, accounting for nearly half of the province's total production.

Moreover, the supporting facilities of Guangdong's new energy vehicle industry are also at the forefront, with the number of public charging stations in the province reaching 563,000 in 2023, accounting for one-fifth of the country's total.

Guangdong's automobile production has consistently ranked first in the country for six consecutive years. It has a relatively complete industrial chain that integrates R&D, design, production, and sales for both complete vehicles and component parts. Continuous enhancement of industrial agglomeration has helped the province establish a series of industrial parks for the automobile industry, such as those in Guangzhou's Huangpu, Huadu, Panyu, Nansha districts, and Foshan's Nanhai District.

The industrial and supply chains of Guangdong's new energy vehicles continue to expand into larger markets. The province has now cultivated a range of local new energy vehicle brands, including BYD, AION, and XPENG. In 2023, BYD became the world's largest new energy vehicle manufacturer.

Currently, these local brands are striving to expand their global markets. For example, BYD's passenger vehicle business has entered 59 countries and regions around the world, including Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, and Thailand, and its sales in overseas markets grew by 4.4 times in 2023. AION has also begun to expand into the Southeast Asian market and has established production lines in Thailand.

Recently, Guangdong issued an action plan to boost its automobile industry. According to the plan, the province will build world-class automobile industry clusters, promote the development of its new energy vehicle industry, and accelerate the integration of automobiles with energy, transportation, and telecommunications.

Furthermore, the plan states that by 2025, the operating turnover of the province's automobile manufacturing industry is expected to exceed 1.35 trillion RMB, with the production of new energy vehicles accounting for more than half of the province's total automobile production. By then, Guangdong's automobile production is expected to exceed 5.3 million units, accounting for more than 18% of the country's total, including more than 3 million new energy vehicles and over 210,000 public charging stations.
