Phase I of the second airport in Guangzhou to be completed in 2027

Guangzhou, following Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, will soon boast two airports. A key project issued by the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the Pearl River Delta Hub (Guangzhou New) Airport project, will start construction this year.

The Phase I project of the second airport in Guangzhou, scheduled from 2024 to 2027, includes the construction ofa3800×45m west No.1 runway, a 3600×45m east No.1 runway,passenger terminals and supporting facilities situatedbetween the runways. According to previously announced plans, by 2035, the passenger throughput of the airport will reach 30 million, and by 2050, the figure will exceed 60 million.

According to data released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) ranked first in terms of domestic flight passenger traffic with 63.17 million passengers in 2023. The airport was also the national leaderin single-airport passenger traffic for four consecutive years.

At present, the Phase III expansion project of Baiyun Airport is in full swing and is scheduled to be completed and put into use in 2025. By then, it will become the world's largest single airport with an annual passenger throughput capacity of 120 million.

By then, the Pearl River Delta Hub (Guangzhou New) Airport will become one of the international aviation hubs in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), an important part of the international aviation hub in Guangzhou, a comprehensive transportation hub in the western part of the GBA, as well as one of the international cargo aviation hubs in the GBA.

As designated in the Implementation Opinions on Supporting the Collaborative Development of Civil Aviation in the Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Areaissued by the CAAC, a world-class airport cluster will be built in the GBA by 2025. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also forecasted that by 2035, the world-class airport cluster in the GBA will boast a civil aviation passenger throughput of over 400 million passengers, a cargo and mail throughput of over 20 million tons, and achievehigh-quality development.
