The regional GDP of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, is expected to reach about 4.5 trillion yuan ($660 billion), with a per capita GDP exceeding $30,000 by 2030, according to the city's outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) for national economic and social development.

"With such regional GDP growth, we will take the lead in basically achieving socialist modernization by 2030," Sun Zhiyang, mayor of Guangzhou, said during a news conference on Friday.

By 2035, Guangzhou aims to double its regional GDP from its 2023 level, reaching 6 trillion yuan and thereby fully achieving the primary goal of rebuilding a new Guangzhou, according to Sun.

The plan outlines nine major categories and nearly 600 key projects with a total investment exceeding 3 trillion yuan, effectively supporting the city's high-quality development with high-quality projects.

"In the first quarter, with the determination to sprint from the start and maintain strong momentum throughout the year, we delivered an economic report that exceeded expectations," Sun said.

The city's GDP realized a year-on-year increase of 6 percent in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing the national average and outpacing the provincial growth rate, according to the local government.
