On August 28, the key tunnel “Xiahuangtian”, the last and the longest of the 52 tunnels of the Meizhou-Longchuan high-speed railway, was drilled through in Meizhou, a city in northeastern Guangdong province.

The Meizhou-Longchuan high-speed railway spans 93.98 kilometers to connect Meizhou and Heyuan with major cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The travel time from Meizhou to Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be shortened from six hours to one and a half when the railway goes into operation in June 2024.
With a designed speed of 350 km/h, the high-speed rail starts from Meizhou West Railway Station and passes through Meixian County, Xingning City, Wuhua County in Meizhou and Longchuan County in Heyuan before terminating at Longchuan West Station, an interchange station with the Ganzhou-Shenzhen high-speed railway.
Known as the “Capital of Hakka in the World,” Meizhou is home to millions of Hakka people, whose ancestors were believed to have moved from central China to the south centuries ago. According to the latest statistics, more than 7 million people whose ancestral home is Meizhou living in over 80 countries and regions.
