Guangzhou's Liwan promotes Foshan lantern art and Cantonese folk music at Guangzhou Cultural Park
Update: 2024-05-07     Source: GDToday

Recently, Guangzhou's Liwan District held a cultural event at Guangzhou Cultural Park in honor of Labor Day and China's Youth Day. The event invited Foshan lantern art craftsmen and the Guangdong famous folk orchestra, "Xiangyin Chamber Orchestra", who joined teenage volunteers in exploring the Lingnan culture.

The first part of the event aimed to promote the traditional craft of lantern making, particularly the renowned Foshan lantern art, which was included in the second batch of the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.

Foshan lantern art, as treasures of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, embodies rich historical and cultural connotations and artistic wisdom. Each lantern represents the sweat and hard work of the craftsmen, showcasing their meticulous attention to detail and dedication to traditional craftsmanship.

Under the careful guidance of experienced Foshan lantern art inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, young volunteers at the event worked together in teams, with some applying glue to attach colored cloth to the frames, while others ensured smooth adhesion. They meticulously trimmed excess fabric, adorned and reinforced the edges with golden thread, and added various decorative elements according to their preferences, making the lanterns even more vibrant.

The second part of the event commenced with a splendid Cantonese folk music performance by the "Xiangyin Chamber Orchestra". Classic Guangdong music pieces such as "Autumn's Moon of Smooth Lake"《平湖秋月》, "Rain Slashing on the Plantain"《雨打芭蕉》, "Rising Higher Step by Step"《步步高》, and "In Celebration of Good Times"《娱乐升平》were performed, captivating the audience with the charm of Cantonese music.

Cantonese folk music, a traditional silk and bamboo music genre popular in the Pearl River Delta Cantonese-speaking region, represents one of the cultural treasures of Cantonese culture. Its melodious and lively style has captivated audiences far and wide, not only in the Lingnan region but also overseas, serving as a spiritual bond for overseas Chinese communities.
