WeChat 'May Day' data: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Foshan among top ten in national consumption heat
Update: 2024-05-08     Source: GDToday

During this year's May Day holiday, Chinese travelers showed strong enthusiasm for travel. Data from the "2024 May Day Data Report" released by WeChat on May 5th shows that Guangdong’s four cities occupy four seats in the top ten cities with consumption heat nationwide. Among them, Guangzhouranks first nationwide, with Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Foshanranking fourth, sixth, and tenth respectively. Other cities on the list include Chongqing, Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Nanning.

Despite rainfall affecting travel in some areas during the holiday, the enthusiasm for travel among Chinese people remained high. WeChat Sports data shows that nearly one-fifth of users walked over 10,000 steps per day, equivalent to completing a mini marathon.

The holiday atmosphere in short videos became even more prominent, with recording snippets of travel experiences such as visiting scenic spots, tasting local cuisine, and navigating through crowds becoming a new holiday habit for WeChat users. During the holiday, the total number of short videos shared on WeChat increased by 38% year-on-year, with a 39% increase in users live streaming on WeChat and a 59% increase in the total number of short travel videos shared on WeChat. Among them, popular destinations for WeChat users include the West Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou, Tian’anmen Square in Beijing, the Bund in Shanghai, the Great Tang All Day Mall in Xi'an, and Beijing Road Pedestrian Street in Guangzhou.

In the top 10 list of popular tourist attractions nationwide, Qingming Shanghe Garden in Kaifeng ranked first, followed by Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, Wuzhen Ancient Town in Jiaxing, Shanghai Disneyland Resort, and Orange Isle Scenic Area in Changsha.

In addition, destinations such as Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Thailand, Japan, and the Republic of Korea have become popular choices for outbound tourism during the holiday.

Industry insiders believe that the surge in cultural tourism during this year's May Day holiday reflects the vibrant vitality and enormous potential of the consumption market, which will help promote sustained recovery and expansion of consumption, thus contributing to the continued improvement of the economy.
