In order to effectively protect trees and promote the high-quality development of the urban and rural greenbelt, the Bureau of Forestry and Landscaping of Guangzhou Municipality recently drafted the city's Implementation Opinions on Scientific Afforestation, which is soliciting public opinions until October 30.
According to the draft, Guangzhou will formulate a long-term protection plan for ancient and famous trees, conduct regular assessments of these trees’ condition, and clarify protection requirements. For street trees, big trees, ancient and famous trees in urban and rural areas, Guangzhou will set up electronic files for them and establish a trees’ identification management system and a tree map.

The opinion makes strict regulations on the migration of trees. For the situation where more than 10 big trees need to be relocated or felled due to one project, the opinions stipulate that the project leader should provide an analysis of its necessity from planting experts and solicit public opinions.
Moreover, Guangzhou has included historic gardens, ancient and famous trees, boulevards, green squares, and green blocks with historical and cultural characteristics into the protection of historic cities. The opinion emphasizes that urban renewal must adhere to the priority of environmental protection, not to damage the topography, not to cut down old trees, and not to rebuild parks of historical value at will.
