Recently, Guangzhou released the eighth batch of representative list of intangible cultural heritages at the municipal level.

The eighth batch published this year includes eight categories, namely folk literature, traditional dances, quyi (a general term for traditional storytelling and ballad-singing), traditional sports, entertainment and acrobatics, traditional arts, traditional skills, traditional Chinese medicine and folk customs.

Forty-eight listed intangible cultural heritages involve 42 new representative items and 6 extended ones.

Of those heritages, the traditional skills of making Cantonese food have caught people's eyes, such as wonton noodles and Cantonese desserts in Liwan district, changfen (steamed rice rolls) in Yuexiu and Liwan districts, siu mai (a type of traditional Chinese dumpling served as dim sum) in Yuexiu district, and jianübing (嫁女饼) in Huangpu district.

By recognizing traditional Cantonese food as the intangible cultural heritages, people can focus more on the cultural meaning behind the food.

Meanwhile, some endangered items on the list have gained more attention. Cantonese wedding, for example, one of the most important customs with strong Guangzhou characteristics, has been promoted after the item being recognized.

According to Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau,the city has a total of 216 intangible cultural heritages at or above the municipal level, 200 intangible cultural heritage inheritors, as well as 100 bases and 21 workshops for intangible cultural heritage.
