See "Insect Hotel" in Guangzhou Liuhua Lake Park!
Update: 2022-12-28     Source: newsgd.com

Recently, the Ecological Belt Project has been upgraded in the Taxodium Distichum Forest Scenic Area of Liuhua Lake Park in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. One of the major works to protect biodiversity in this upgrading is to build an "Insect Hotel" – a small wooden house built among the trees.

This "Insect Hotel" is a place where insects breed, inhabit, and overwinter. Wood, straw, bricks, bamboo, and other recyclable natural materials are placed in it to make different types of "rooms" for insects according to their habits. It also protects ladybugs, lacewings, solitary bees, geckos, and other beneficial insects to help control pests and diseases, pollinate plants, and balance the ecosystem.

An “Insect Hotel” made of well-selected materials can attract carnivorous insects that feed on many pests to help pest control. For example, a ladybug can eat 150 aphids a day, lacewings can handle red spiders and aphids, Dastarcus Helophoroide deals with longicorns, and Carabidae kills snails and slugs. Based on the food chain, different carnivorous insects can be introduced into insect hotels to deal with insects that harm plants in parks, gardens, and jungles.

The "Insect Hotel" not only provides a place for insects to breed and inhabit but also opens a window for the observation of nature as an opportunity to learn about biological diversity and importance.

Nowadays, Liuhua Lake Park built six insect hotels in the Taxodium Distichum Forest Scenic Area in this upgrade. They will also grow aromatic plants in scenic spots to attract pollinator insects such as butterflies soon.
