2025 Lingnan Music Series at Xinghai Concert Hall: explore intangible cultural heritage of Cantonese music
Update: 2025-09-23     Source: South

Join us on September 27 at Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou for the Lingnan Music Series: Cantonese Music Concert performed by the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, where you can listen to music, immerse yourself in the concert, and explore the rich history of the national intangible cultural heritage of Cantonese music.

This concert will feature a special collaboration with the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, alongside Cantonese opera master Yuen Siu-fai and municipal-level representative inheritor of Cantonese music, Chen Fangyi.

As a professional Chinese chamber music ensemble focusing on local traditions, the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, under the artistic direction of renowned conductor Ho Man-chuen, will perform over a dozen meticulously crafted masterpieces of Cantonese music, including Fun of Cantonese Music.

The concert will also feature a performance of nearly lost traditional tunes by Cantonese opera master Yuen Siu-fai and an impressive display by Chen Fangyi, a National Class One Performer, who will skillfully play three instruments: the keyed Sheng (a Chinese mouth organ), suona (a traditional double-reed woodwind instrument), and saxophone.

In addition to the concert, Xinghai Concert Hall has partnered with Guangdong Museum and other institutions to launch a series of related events.

On September 26, the Night at the Museum will kick off at Guangdong Museum, featuring a public lecture concert performed by five traditional musical instruments.

On September 27, the One-Day Study Tour themed "Lingnan Music in Guangzhou" will take citizens to Shawan Ancient Town, an important birthplace of Cantonese music, to explore its historical roots.

Before the concert, Cantonese opera master Yuen Siu-fai will host a pre-concert sharing session, explaining the background and artistic features of pieces like Sorrows on an Autumn Trip to help the audience better understand Cantonese music.

This concert is one of the featured performances of the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival, co-organized by Xinghai Concert Hall and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
