What's on for New Year Season at Guangzhou Opera House

With 2023 right around the corner, the Guangzhou Opera House will usher in its New Year Season. With the theme "Regather, Rejoice, Restart", the 2023 New Year Season will take place from December 16, 2022 to January 12, 2023.

A wide range of genres including dance, theatre, opera, and musicals will be presented in 11 outstanding shows, and more than half of these shows will be new productions or world premieres. Here are some highlights.

Dance theaterThe Station

After the success of the Hotel and the Dream of Red Mansions, the renowned young dancer Li Xing returns with another brilliant piece of work. This time, Li Xing performs with the top street dance studio "HelloDance" to present the dance theater; The Station. This world premiere will be presented at the Guangzhou Opera House on December 16 and 17, kicking off the 2023 New Year Season.

Dance drama: Wing Chun

The new dance drama Wing Chun, directed by Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, is the highlight of the New Year's Eve shows. This dance drama focuses on Lingnan Martial Arts and depicts the essence of martial arts through dance. With "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting", "The past of Shawan", and "The Eternal Wave" as their magnum opus, Han Zhen and Zhou Liya are renowned by dance enthusiasts as the leading figures in Chinese dance drama.

Time: December 29, 2022- January 1, 2023

The Chinese version of Monte Cristo Musical

The Chinese version of the Monte Cristo Musical is produced by and will star Ayanga as Edmond. This musical not only has the same thrilling plot and suspense as the original story, but also diverse and amazing music and dance choreography. Coupled with exquisite stage design, this musical recreates the various scenes depicted in the original story, including life at sea, in prison, and with the upper class.

Time: January 6 to 8, 2023

Drama: Compendium of Materia Medica

The drama Compendium of Materia Medica will be presented by QFunTheater and the Guangzhou Opera House. It is the first drama in which children wrote the script and lyrics and composed the music and choreography in China. Combined with the concept of the metaverse, these children have used their imaginations to depict a future world that is both fantastical and realistic. This drama makes use of diverse means of stagecraft, including multimedia, wires, and virtual reality, to take the audience back in time for a glimpse of the aesthetics of ancient China and an immersive experience of future cyberpunk.

Time: January 11 to 12, 2023

On top of that, other great shows are not to be missed. They include a chamber version of G. Donizetti's one-act comic opera "Rita", the drama "Two Capitals, Fifteen Days", "The Nutcracker" by Guangzhou Ballet, and the piano recital by Yin Zhi. Let's enjoy a feast of the arts!
