Update: 2024-01-23     Source: GDToday

The 2024 Youth Music Culture The Greater Bay Area (YMCG) officially kicked off on January 20, with a mesmerizing concert at the Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou.

The opening concert, conducted by Cui Linhan, featured the performance of young violinist Lin Ruifeng and the "Greater Bay Area Festival Orchestra", a collaboration of musicians from the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and Macao Orchestra. The repertoire included Zhou Tian's "Metropolis", Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op.77, as well as Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No.8 in G major, Op.88.

This year, British conductor Daniel Harding assumed the role of Music Director for the 2024 YMCG. Distinguished musicians from top-tier orchestras worldwide, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, formed an illustrious mentorship team for the event.

Additionally, over 80 participants from more than 50 prestigious institutions, such as the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory of Music, the Central Conservatory of Music, the national music academy of China, and Xinghai Conservatory of Music, as well as young musicians from 16 professional orchestras in China, banded together to form the 2024 YMCG Orchestra. They will embark on a musical journey, presenting concerts in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, as well as participating in chamber music salons, workshops, rehearsals, and more.

Harding mentioned that playing alongside accomplished musicians from top international symphony orchestras, each with diverse cultural backgrounds, would be an extraordinary and rare experience for young musicians.

Furthermore, these young musicians will visit and perform at various cultural and tourist landmarks across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). In Guangzhou, they will explore Cantonese opera at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and experience Chaozhou wood carving and ethnic costumes at the Guangdong Museum, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Guangdong.
