French musical 'Don Juan' to premiere in Guangzhou in April
Update: 2024-04-07     Source: Yangcheng Evening News

As one of the three stars of French musicals, "Don Juan" will make its debut in Guangzhou for the first time on the occasion of its 20th anniversary since its premiere. It will be performed for five consecutive shows from April 12th to 14th.

Created by French composer Félix Gray in 2003 and directed by Gilles Maheu, director of the French musical "Notre-Dame de Paris," the musical premiered in 2004 and has seen tremendous success in countries such as France and Canada.

For centuries, artistic works such as literature, drama, music, and film about Don Juan have emerged incessantly. Artists offered their own interpretations of this character in different genres and languages. Don Juan's image has evolved from a mere debauchee or playboy despised by everyone to a cultural symbol and a fascinating "antagonist" in people's minds.

In 2004, the musical "Don Juan" premiered in Canada, presenting a modern interpretation of the story. The production focuses more on the character of Don Juan and his story from the perspective of humanity, revealing the inner changes of the characters through songs and dances.

Over the past twenty years, the musical "Don Juan" has enjoyed great success in France, Canada, ROK, and other locations. In 2016, the renowned Takarazuka Revue even produced and performed a Japanese version, receiving applause.

The set design of "Don Juan" is dreamlike and magnificent, reminiscent of impressionist oil paintings. Enormous stone statues and eerie lighting enhance the magical effect. The music, with almost every song worth replaying, accompanied by rhythmic flamenco dances, colorful guitar melodies, and occasional Spanish songs, fills the musical with a captivating Spanish atmosphere.

The French version of "Don Juan," being staged in Guangzhou for the first time, will be led by the top actor of French musicals, Gian Marco Schiaretti, in the role of Don Juan. With his powerful stage presence and superb singing skills, Gian captivates a legion of fans.

Also making an appearance in the production is Laurent Ban, a familiar face for Guangzhou audiences. Laurent Ban is known for his portrayal of Salieri in "Mozart, L'Opera Rock," where he portrayed the character's inner struggles and arrogance to perfection.

With the stellar performances by French theater stars, audiences can expect a charming musical in Guangzhou.
