6th Women Art Festival, audio-visual enjoyment in Guangzhou

The sixth Women Arts Festival will be held from February 10 to April 2 at the Guangzhou Opera House. The festival will bring 15 performances covering dramas, ballets, classical music, musicals, stand-up comedies, and high-definition (HD) screenings, as well as events such as lectures, salons, jazz workshops, presenting the diverse talents of women artists.

Here are some highlights of the festival.

Dance

If you're a dance lover, don't miss the dance theater See directed and starred by Tang Shiyi, the lead dancer from the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater. In this performance, she will have a dialogue with herself and life, finding her way through reality and illusion.

A Dream in Red Mansions, an original ballet created and choreographed by the National Ballet of China (NBC) with Tong Ruirui as the chief choreographer, will be presented on March 9 to 11. The show fuses ballet, Chinese traditional culture, and literature, leading the audience into the Grand View Garden (a massive landscaped interior garden in the Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber).

In addition, NBC will also present The Red Detachment of Women, the first ballet work that combines the art form of Western ballet with Chinese folk dance.

Musical & Drama

Based on Leo Tolstoy's novel, the Chinese version of the musical Anna Karenina will be the grand finale of the Women Art Festival this year. It was produced by the creative team of the original Russian musical and will discuss the philosophical propositions of love and death, freedom and fate in more than 40 songs in the genres of classical, pop, and rock.

From March 3 to 5, audiences will be able to watch the Chinese version of Next to Normal, an American rock musical that won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards. The show follows a mother with worsening bipolar disorder as she struggles with the disease and its impact on her family.

The suspense stage drama The Relief Of The Virginwas adapted from Higashino Keigo's novel Salvation of a Saint, telling a story of love and hate in a woman's marriage.

Furthermore, the HD Screening Series includes the drama The Seagull, where Emilia Clarke made her West End debut, as well as La Bayadère by La Scala Ballet.

Concert

During the festival, many female musicians will bring concerts to the public. Piano Recital presented by Shi Boyangwill present a repertoire encompassing German and Austrian classics.

The Playlist of the Fashion Queen presented by Mezzo-Soprano Ying Liwill show the life of Coco Chanel.

Mezzo-soprano Wen Muya will perform arias of operas by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Monologue - Ziyu Shen Viola Recitalwill display classics by Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Astor Piazzolla, as well as her premiere of British composer Rebecca Clarke's masterpiece Morpheus.
