The following is based on The Administrative Regulations on Higher-Education Institutions Hosting International Students.

Visa

International students, while conducting registration procedures, shall present their passport and X or F Visa. 
International students studying in China for more than six months shall present their Visa Application for Study in China (JW201 or JW202), Admission Notice and Physical Examination Record for Foreigners, while applying for an X Visa at the visa-granting offices designated in their countries by Chinese government authorities.

International students studying in China for less than six months shall present their Visa Application for Study in China (JW201 or JW202) and Admission Notice, while applying for an F Visa at the visa-granting offices designated in their countries by the Chinese government authorities.

The unit of international students for short-term study in China can apply for an F Group Visa by presenting their invitations authorized by relevant organizations.

Holders of a Diplomatic Passport, Service Passport, Official Passport and/or Special Passport issued by foreign authorities and holders of a Diplomatic Passport, Service Passport or Courtesy Visa, if they want to receive education in China's institutions of higher learning, shall present a note from diplomatic authorities in their countries which declares that the holder gives up their diplomatic privileges and immunities while studying in China. Before applying to the Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office for X or F Visa, they shall present an approval letter issued by the foreign affairs offices of provincial or ministerial levels.

In accordance with the Visa Exemption Agreement, holders of a Diplomatic Passport, Service Passport, Official Passport and/or Special Passport who want to receive education in China's institutions of higher learning shall change for an ordinary passport to apply for an X or F Visa to the Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office.

Holders of ordinary passport without X or F Visa, if wanting to receive education in China's institutions of higher learning, shall apply for X or F Visa to the Exit and Entry Administration of Public Security organs. 

Relatives of international students who want to accompany the students in China shall present invitation letters issued by the relevant institutions of higher learning while applying for an L Visa through China's embassies or consulates in their countries. With the invitation letter, relatives can apply for a visa extension to the Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office. The relatives are not allowed to stay longer than the period permitted in the residence permit for the foreign students. 

Physical Examination

International students studying in China for more than six months shall have their Physical Examination Record for Foreigners checked by the health and quarantine departments within a limited time. Those who fail to present Physical Examination Record for Foreigners shall receive a physical examination conducted by the local health and quarantine departments. Those disqualified students shall be required to return to their home countries immediately.

Residence

Holders of an X Visa shall apply for a Residence Permit for Foreigners with the local Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office within 30 days after their entry into China. If any changes are made about their residence permit, they shall conduct transfer procedures at the local Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office within 10 days.

International students, before moving to another city to continue with their study, shall conduct the required procedures at the local Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office and conduct acceptance procedures at the Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office of the city where they move to within ten days.

While studying in China, international students shall conduct entry procedures while leaving China for transitory exit. International students shall conduct procedures for extension of their visas of residence permits if they want to stay for another period of time.

International students, after finishing their studies, graduation or withdrawal from studies, shall leave China within a limited time. The Exit and Entry Administration of the Public Security Office, after being notified by the relevant schools, shall, in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations, shorten the period of validity or confiscate the residence permits of those international students who are expelled from school or whose degree certificates are revoked.
