Animal Admiration

There are two crane forests in Maogang Village of Dasha Town, Huangpu District. One is the Yuanbei crane forest, beside the Maogang village committee. The forest covers an area of 30 mu and has 2000 or more cranes. The other one is the Kengtou Crane Forest, on the hillock behind Cangxia village of Kengtou, Maogang. It occupies 40 or so mu and has 1000 or more cranes.

The towering trees in the forests are in profusion, presenting a tranquil and beautiful scenery. The Cranes which perch there are mainly flaxen cranes, demoiselle cranes, white cranes and siberian white cranes, with flaxen cranes the most.

It is said close 100 plus years ago, a returned overseas Chinese brought back a pair of white cranes and fed them in a cage. One day, because of lack of vigilance by their keepers, the white cranes flew away to woods outside of the village, where they perched and reproduced. Now, there are thousands of pairs of cranes in the forests. They fly out in the morning and return at night. As the sun rises, thousands of cranes fly into the sky. What a grand picture!

Maogang crane forests constitute a special ecological landscape in Huangpu District, as well as the rare place where herons perch in China's big cities.
