It is located within the Huadu District, and is China's first airport planned and designed in accordance with the standards of international hub airports, and as such enjoys the highest level of China's modernization. It has the first independent operation procedures for dual-track which can meet the requirements of synchronous landing and take-off for two runways and landing and take-off for various types of large aircraft in the world and covers an area of 14.4 square kilometers. The airport was awarded "the Top Ten Construction Technology Achievement in 2005 in China."

As a new airport and even a landmark in Guangzhou, it blends the world's most advanced construction technology and materials, and displays, as it does the charm of modern architectural art. The exterior, presents a natural flow of the slight arch-shaped overall design, creates an unlimited extension of visual imaginations and implies the beautiful idea of linking the world through the airport which acts as an air bridge. The airport, as a whole, adopts an envelope design made of steel roof trusses and spot connecting glass curtain wall, to creates a spacious and bright visual effect in its interior.

The roof of the main building is designed into a two-tier curved roof design laid out with different curvatures. The shape of the roofs with different heights looks as if a great hawk were spreading its wings. The tensioned materials used for the higher roof is transparent, forming a long skylight in the main building and echoes through with similar smaller glass skylights in the external verandah structures.. These roofs absorb natural light for the airport; and at certain times of the day the rays of sunlight in turn create a wonderful visual experience on the interior support walls creating a marvelous display of changing light and shadow for travelers, turning the airport into a light and graceful crystal city in the evening.
