Since China launched the reform and opening-up drive, Guangzhou's economic prosperity has provided favorable conditions for the city's urban construction. The city is pressing ahead with the construction of an extensive network of modern infrastructure facilities and has completed a number of landmark building projects, such as the International Convention and Exhibition Center and, in addition, various throughways and thoroughfares. Construction of the subway system is progressing smoothly. City authorities have also launched a program to improve traffic conditions in major nodes of central urban area. Moreover, the construction of the four new major sewage treatment systems and domestic garbage treatment facilities is progressing rapidly.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

On August 5, 2004, the new Baiyun International Airport was officially put into service. As the mainland's first large-scale modernized airport built with hub airport concepts and one of China's top three hub airports, the Baiyun Airport can accommodate the world's largest airplane taking off or landing at full capacity. It is already one of the world's busiest airports.

Currently, Baiyun International Airport establishs business relationship with 33 airlines, launching 110 flight routes to connect Guangzhou with more than 100 cities home and abroad, obtaining nearly 30 different jet models.

Expressways and Throughways

City authorities are accelerating the development of an urban transportation network and a system of high-grade expressways linking Guangzhou to the cluster of cities in the Pearl River Delta. City authorities are making strong efforts to improve the regional highway structure, step up the renovation and construction of existing arterial roads, and implementation of the program to improve urban transportation systems.

In order to meet the social and economic development of Pearl River Delta (PRD), a traffic network construction plan for intercity railway among PRD was made. It is to construct 16 intercity railways with a total length of 1478 kilometers until 2020. After completion, the traffic network can connect Guangzhou with Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan and other main cities, then the travel time between each two cities will be cut to one hour. 

Ports

Guangzhou Port mainly covers four port areas, from mouth of Pearl River to the Downtown, they are Nansha , Xinsha, Huangpu and Downtown. It has a variety of advanced and professional berths for large containers, coals, grains, oil and chemicals. Besides, the largest berth for roll-on-roll-off ship in South China locates at Guangzhou Port. By the end of 2014, Guangzhou port totally possessed 686 berths, 69 of which are above 10,000 tons; 23 buoys and 88 anchorages can anchor at most 300,000 tons.

Subway

According to Guangzhou’s construction plan for rail transit (2015-2025), Guangzhou is going to own over 1000km metro line from the current 260km metro line. In future, at least 3 metro line will go through Nansha District and Zengcheng District. From 2015 to 2025, Guangzhou plans to construct 16 more metro lines covering a length of 432.6 km with nearly 297.6 billion Yuan investment.
